About the Artist
Aya Brackett was born and raised in a traditional Japanese house, off the grid in the mountains of Northern California and now lives in Berkeley, California. She studied painting as a child and received a degree in Photography and Visual Arts at Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design in 2001.
Her work draws heavily on an appreciation of still life painting and often incorporates themes of food and the natural world. One series, Between Meals, looks at the remnants and arrangements of food as it exists in states of preparation, consumption and decay. Brackett's images are often deliberately arranged and this interaction with the subject matter is one of her favorite parts of the photography process. Her work has appeared in galleries, in the permanent collection of the Crocker Art Museum, and numerous publications including Dwell, Gastronomica and the London Sunday Telegraph Magazine.
